Microsoft-Yahoo Deal: Ironic Comment of the Day

Telecom Comments (0)

I claim no prescience as to whether Microsoft will succeed in taking over Yahoo, and there are far too many zeros in the number $44,600,000,000 for me to have an idea of whether it’s a worthy offer for shareholders or not. I’m befuddled, often, just by the range of prices available to me for a simple cup of coffee on the five-mile trip to my writer’s nook. ($1.16 to $2.06, if you’re wondering; and none of them are Starbucks.)

But I do know irony when I see it, and sniggered this morning at this quote in The New York Times:

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s general counsel, said “any number of companies might have an interest” in Yahoo, but added that a Google-Yahoo merger was “clearly prevented by the antitrust laws.”

That Microsoft’s general counsel could suggest with a straight face that it is the company’s position that *anything at all* is clearly prevented by antitrust laws is one of the funnier things I’ve read in a while. Thanks, Brad! Did the Times reporter laugh at all? Did you cringe at least a little?
